ATTN SBuilderX 64 and Win10 Workaround

Hi,

I guess it is well known in the meanwhile that SBX 64 does not work correctly when you run it under Win 10 due to an incompatibility with the shapelib.dll. SBX 64 can't compile CVX data, throwing an error.

Tom Stovall and I had the idea to run it in a virtual Win7-64 machine under Win 10 Professional. We are glad to report that this is working like a charm. The basic steps are:

- In the Win 10 Hypervisor Manager, define a new VM and install Win 7 64 in it.
- Add and configure a network adapter using the virtual switch (Tom wrote a small howto for that)
- Configure the network adapter so it matches your local network config and you have access to the internet as well as to your host system
- Share your dev / p3d / FSX / SDK folder on your Win10 host system, or share the whole drive
- Attach the shared drive / folders in your VM so you can access it
- Install SBX 64 in the VM and configure it to access the resources on the Win10 host
- Done!

Note: The HyperV VM is only accessible in the Win10 Professional version. If you run Win 10 Home, you must use a third party VM, like Virtual Box. This has not been tested though. Reports on any experiences from users who try similar solutions are welcomed!

Cheers,
Mark +Tom

Hello Roger ,

New on this forum , I try to run SBX 317 64 bits on a Win7 VM attached to mu W10 pro host.
I've installed SBX and it works , I can use Google satellite with LOD18 définition

I 'm facing 2 issues :
- my host machine FSX is not recognized when I start SBX , I've to declare the FSX path
- when started SBX does not see FSX , FSUIPC does not run

I think I've missed something according to your" by roger-wilco-66 » Thu Sep 29, 2016 5:27 am" post , I try to find "(Tom wrote a small howto for that)" the mentionned post without success

Could you help me

Regards

Hi,

sorry, I didn't see the reply until now.
You have to declare a "home network" on your host and obtain a joining code, and make the VM join that network with the given code. It then will see the host and the paths / drives you opened for network access. That should take care of the acessability of the host paths and working folders.

FSUIPC is another matter, this should be doable via the WideFSClient and the WidesFS Server which is integrated into FSUIPC. You need a license for this, though!

HTH,
Mark

So I am reading a thread that was started in September 2016. It is now Sept 2017.

A year has past and not a fix?

Don't really know what you mean by a fix. Flight Simulator X was canceled 11 years ago and development of SBuilder ended as well. SBuilder was the work of Luis Sá who spent much of his time making this great and free tool for us and we are grateful.

Anybody who wants to create a new and better scenery design tool for a game that was canceled over a decade ago and with a very small user base is welcome to do so.

To add to what Luis explained, this thread shows the solution. Use Windows 7. Perhaps Windows 8 also works.

Microsoft broke the program with Windows 10. Thee was no way to know this would happen when the program was created

I created a 32 bit version that also resolves the problem. The only difference in function of the 32 bit version is that some very large images may present a problem. And that would be quite an unusual occurrence.

Also, the SBuilderX version 313 should also work.

I'm using the x64 and x86 if something doesn't work I just jump over to the other one, but of course I can't open them if they are saved with the other one.

You're right. The Solution to this (and many other software) problems is to downgrade to Windows 7 as Windows 10 has compatibility issues with many many software. Microsoft should launch the next version of OS only after thorough testing.
