terrain elevation issues after using geotiff data

Post by cfm_spool » Thu May 14, 2015 4:07 pm

Hello

I've been using SbuilderX for a few weeks now, following tutorial here and there (which is mind exhausting), and I finally able to make my own basic PhotoRealScenery. Now I am trying to use real world DEM data to give my scenery height / elevation / etc etc. I managed to convert some STRM .tiff files from USGS, resample it and created a .bgl from it. So I load up my FSX and the results can be seen here

1.https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/ ... 2830_o.jpg

2.https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/ ... 2755_o.jpg

and

4.https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/ ... 4591_o.jpg

So as you guys can see, my runway is buried, and there's places where the elevation just kinda.. abruptly cut off (sorry if I sounded weird, but then again, English isn't my first language). So how do I fix this? How do I reconcile the terrain? Is there any guide or tutorial out there that I can follow? I've been searching for hours and I can't found any solution, so I figure I can just ask questions here.

Note: It turns out that the DEM tile doesn't cover the entire Island, which might explain the anomaly on the left side of the island, but not on the upper right ones. Anyway, is there anyway to combine two separate .bgl elevation files, like we did with multiple bmp files?

Thank you

Guessing here, based upon the pictures. The first has two drawn areas in red. Does this show where the airport was and where you've moved it to? If so, did you exclude the old airport flatten and make a new one where you moved the airport to? If you didn't make a new flatten, that would cause the terrain to swallow your runway!

There are some tutorials, probably at Avsim, by a guy named Luis. 8) Search under author Luis Feliz-Tirado and there should be a bunch of reading material for you to go over.

Thanks for the recommendation Meshman, I definitely going to read all the tuts. 8)

No, I drew the red areas to show the terrain anomalies. On the left, is the mountain cut in half, and on the right is the buried runway.

Btw, after reading a few tutorials, I have fix the runway Issue by flattening it using ADE.

Now all that's left is to smooth out the elevation differences.

Following up, in a timely manner...

Going back and looking at the pictures, what the abrupt drop off in elevation shows is where the default water is flattening the terrain. Though there is photo work over the area, that would not change the flattening effect of the underlying water polygon. So to correct that issue, the default water poly for that area needs to be excluded and a new, more accurately drawn to match the photo work, water polygon be added so that the mesh can render properly.

Thank you for the info. Sorry for the late reply. I thought the site have been closed for good, today is the first time I checked in after a while.
